Предопределение - не просто Факт
Если бы все, что было открыто в Писании - это ФАКТ предопределения, то есть факт того, что Бог предопределил некоторых к вечной славе, то мы не получили бы ПЛОДА Божьего предызбрания. Если Бог предызбрал кого-то, но я не знаю, избрал ли Бог МЕНЯ, и уж точно не знаю, избрал ли Бог ТЕБЯ, то все что мне остается - это неопределенность. Я не могу знать, предызбрал ли меня Бог вечно разделять славу Христову. Я не могу знать, предызбрал ли Он тебя, я не могу знать, предызбрал ли Он вообще кого-то.
Получается, что мы берем Божье предопределение, предназначенное приносить нам утешение, и переносим его в область эфемерного и абстрактного, вне досягаемости, так что мы не можем уже ничего знать о нем. Нам остается в лучшем случае строить догадки, доброжелательные предположения о людях в Церкви. Это в том случае, если бы Бог сказал только о ФАКТЕ предопределения. Слава Богу, что это не так.

Yes ... an American ... one who wishes he had a cyrillic keyboard, since it is a bit presumptuous to post here in English.
And yes, I have read "Преступление и наказание" in Russian, though only after I had read it in English. I've always been struck by the poor translation of the title. It seems to me that "Преступление" is (more or less literally) "Transgression" ... a much more Biblical term than "Crime" and much more in keeping with the theme of the book. Similarly, "наказание" seems to have more of a judicial feel ... like "sentence" (in the courtroom sense) ot "judgment". Again, much more obviously a Biblical reference and much more in keeping with the theme.
Anyway, I plan to check in here periodically as time permits.

I enjoy reading Dostoevski precisely because his Christian philosophy comes through ... his characters struggle with temptation, sin and their own inability to do good. They also struggle with the need to humble self and accept God's unconditional love and forgiveness. Odd that we tend to insist on earning something that (a) cannot be earned anyway, and (b) *we* could not earn, even if it were "earn-able". In America, however, the essential Christian character of Dostoevski's thought is often missed (or dismissed) when he is taught. We too often see him as a dark champion of the enlightenment and (if anything) one who bemoans the way people are "trapped" by religious "baggage". Very sad. (Of course, he is often well understood, too. My friend Ben House http://benhouseblog.blogspot.com/ often blogs on literature, and he certainly understands authors with a Christian perspective.
And as to discussions, I do enjoy interaction. I hope that any who read this will join in the discussions (по Русски of course).
